Aliou’s Story: On the Court, in the Struggle
Aliou is the basketball captain and a semi-pro player for Port Autonome de Dakar. On the court, his limbs seem to stretch endlessly—blocking shots, commanding space, as if reaching to hold the whole city of Dakar. Off the court, Aliou rides his motorbike, listens to reggae, and introduced Cosmin to Dakar’s best lemon coffee at Chez Elias, a small stall tucked into the busy intersection at Grand Dakar. As they moved through the city together, Aliou shared the perks and pressures of life in Dakar—always on the move, always hustling. He trains, bakes cakes, makes deliveries, leads his team, supports others, and sometimes simply offers a cup of tea as a gesture of care.
A Baye Fall, Aliou is kind, deeply spiritual, and firmly grounded in the realities around him. He is politically conscious—discussing inequality on a rooftop, serving food during Ramadan, and leading a strike when PAD stopped paying salaries to him and his teammates. For Aliou, basketball is not just a sport; it’s a livelihood. He and his teammates are not just athletes—they are workers, with families to support and dreams to pursue.
Aliou hasn’t just appeared in the film—he helped shape it. He led collaborative workshops and conducted street interviews, asking people about belonging, ambition, and whether they wanted to stay or leave. What begins as a sports story becomes something much deeper: a call for dignity, and a refusal to wait in silence and resignation.
